PRESIDENTIAL PREFERENCE PRIMARY- Important Information

Presidential Preference Primary Important Information

A presidential preference primary takes an act by the Kansas legislature to be conducted. The enactment takes the responsibility from the two state parties (Republican and Democrat) in Kansas from conducting a caucus, and instead, having the state of Kansas conduct a primary election. It is a “preference” primary because it is an election where the vote totals are given to a political party to allocate delegates to candidates at the national convention. This is not a primary where the voters select the party candidate.

The Presidential Preference Primary will be held on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024. Polling locations will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Only voters who are affiliated with the Republican or Democrat parties will be eligible to cast a ballot. Unaffiliated voters may affiliate to either party in order to cast a ballot by completing a voter registration form. Unaffiliated voters can affiliate to either party and cast a ballot, up to and on election day. Voters who are affiliated with the Republican, Democrat, Libertarian or Kansas No Labels parties that wish to cast a ballot MUST change their affiliation by completing a voter registration form by Tuesday, February 20th, 2024.

Voters who wish to receive an advance mail ballot must submit their advance ballot application form by Tuesday, February 20th, 2024. Applications received after this date will not be accepted or processed.

The deadline to return an advance mail ballot for the Presidential Preference Primary is by 7:00 p.m. on election night. Post-marked mail ballots received after election night will not be accepted or processed.
